Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM5/94348963 AB OBJECTIVES: To investigate the possibility of any additional recipients from the common donor and to further describe the health status of the group. RESULTS: 7 more donations were identified and 4 recipients traced and tested. 3 recipients of 1980 donations tested negative. A 77 year old female transfused in April 1981 tested anti-HIV positive. She is asymptomatic, with conserved CD4+ count, 12 years since transfusion. The asymptomatic group have been reviewed an average of 8.5 years following infection. They are PCR positive, all remain clinically asymptomatic with conserved CD4 counts and none have received anti-viral therapy. CONCLUSION: The identification of yet another asymptomatic recipient from a single common donor, 12 years since infection, and the continued asymptomatic status of the group strongly suggests that the donor and the new hosts have all been infected with a relatively non-virulent strain of HIV-1.
